Backscenes & Scenics

As part of our Spring Weekend we offer a course with professional scenic artist Paul Bambrick, Paul has created 3D backscenes on many layouts. You can explore Paul’s impressive body of work in more detail on his website.

Paul will show you how to create your own convincing miniature landscape for a layout or diorama. He is particularly interested in backscenes that integrate two and three-dimensional modelling. This a rare opportunity to work one-to-one with one of the true masters of the art and you’ll learn all about the essentials of perspective, horizons, scales and vanishing points, not necessarily in that order. Discovering how to compress two scale miles into 3/4″ without it seeming obvious is a truly fascinating experience. However, this course will also appeal to any modeller wanting to improve their scenic skills including water, civil engineering and trees either on their model railway or as a standalone diorama.
Paul has a page on his website dedicated to the course he tutors at Missenden Abbey, this gives an outline of what he does and how the course operates. This is well worth visiting to learn more about the course.
