People have been honing their skills at Missenden Abbey’s unique Railway Modellers’ Weekends for 50 years. We offer hands-on, practical courses covering a large range of subjects relating to the many and varied skills required to create a model railway.
Working with some of the best-known tutors in the hobby, you have multiple course options available – from chassis construction to electronics, scenics to kit-building, from soldering and track building to airbrush painting and lining, structure modelling and weathering with and without an airbrush. As well as the traditional skills and techniques we also cater for the latest developments with courses on 2D & 3D CAD, using 3D printers and laser cutters. We constantly evolve and update the courses we offer in response to new developments and feedback from our attendees.

Courses are residential on a full board basis but if you live locally, you can come in daily at a reduced fee. Non-residential attendance includes lunches and evening meals. We run two weekends a year, in Spring and Autumn and offer a different mix of topics at each. In addition we run a week long summer retreat aimed at those who have bigger projects they wish to complete with the advantage of having expert advice on-hand.
We aim to help you build a working model or develop a project that’s well on its way to completion by the time you go home – and, above all, to enjoy yourself. Though not generally suitable for the outright beginner, the courses are ideal for the modeller with basic skills or knowledge wanting to make further progress or feeling their working methods need refreshment.
